(1 Peter 5:5)
Beloved,
There is a quiet wisdom that settles over a life that has walked with God long enough to know His patterns. Our elders carry that kind of wisdom, not because they are perfect, but because they have survived what we are still learning to name. They have endured storms we have not yet seen, prayed prayers we have not yet needed, and stood in places we have not yet grown into.
This Sanctuary Letter is an invitation for the young to lean into wisdom with humility, honor, and discernment. Draw near to them. Listen and obey.
🌿 Scripture Anchor
“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you are subject
one to another, and be clothed with humility.” – 1 Peter 5:5
Submission here is not about control. It is about posture. It is about recognizing that God often hides guidance in the voices of those who have walked before us.
🌿 The Teaching Heart
Young people, hear this with love: You are gifted. You are called. You are rising. But you are not rising alone.
God places elders in your life as guardrails, as interpreters of seasons, as living testimonies of what God can do with a surrendered life. Their stories are not outdated. Their stories are not outdated. Their counsel is not irrelevant. Their presence is not accidental.
When you submit – not in fear, but in humility, you gain access to:
Wisdom that protects you
Correction that shapes you
Perspective that strengthens you
Legacy that anchors you
Submission is not silence. It is teachability. It is the willingness to say, “I don’t know everything, and I don’t have to.
🌿 A Practical Invitation
This week, choose one elder-family, church, or community, and do one of the following.:
Ask for a story about a season they survived
Seek counsel on something you’re navigating
Offer honor through gratitude or service
Invite prayer over your next step
You will be surprised how God meets you in their voice.
🌿 Declaration Over You
I speak this over every young heart reading:
You will not walk in pride.
You will not despise wisdom.
You will not reject the voices God sends.
You will grow in grace, in humility, and in spiritual maturity.
You will rise, but you will rise rooted.
🌿 Reflection Questions
Where have I resisted the wisdom of elders in my life
What fear or pride keeps me from receiving guidance
Which elder has God placed near me for this season
How can I practice humility this week
🌿 Closing Blessing
May the Lord clothe you with humility, crown you with wisdom,
and surround you with voices that sharpen, steady, and strengthen
your walk. May you honor those who came before you, and may you
become an elder worth listening to in due time.
With grace and peace,
Debra Stith
